ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS AND MATERIALS TEXTBOOK

MEDIA RESPONSE
"Technical Selection" (24-7-1997)

The need for a modern “technology of electronic components” led to the publishing of this book which includes the following topics:
In the first chapter materials which are used (conductors, insulators, semi-conductors) and their attributes are described.
The second chapter looks at the resistors in all their forms (fixed, variable, divisors, imprinted, ICs, SMD, thermistors, varistors, LDT, special).
The third one is devoted to capacitors (dielectric, electrolytic, double-coating, plated, ICs, SMD, variable) and their applications.
The fourth chapter looks through coils, fixed, variable, high and low frequency, special and SMD.
At the end, the fifth chapter examines the RC-LC networks of ceramic or other technology, the suppressors of categories X and Y, the ceramic suppressors (BC capacitors, BCV, current), the EMI/RFI, ceramic and SAW filters as well as the resonators. In every chapter you will find an analysis of the attributes, the equivalent circuits, the categories, the elements, the codes, the standardization and the applications of the components examined. In the Appendix, 13 different characteristic DATA SHEETS of the most common components are examined.

The book is written by Thanassis G. Giokas and is available in the bookstores PAPASOTIRIOU S.A., Athens: Stournari 35, 10682, tel. no. 3809821, fax. 3648254, Thessaloniki: Eth. Aminas 40, 54621, tel. no. 243660, fax. 263153.

"Periskopio tis epistimis" (N.213, January 1998)

The electronic technology has developed and propagated in such an extent that is applied in almost every item of our everyday life. The components manufacturers provide to the technologists have reached in such a variety that the memorization of the attributes, even their wide categories is impossible. So, every electronic needs a more practical reference book, which will act as compass and effectively provide the most appropriate components for each particular case, inform about the their requirements and limitations and explore alternatives. Such a guide, enhanced by the newest data offers Thanassis G. Giokas in his ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS AND MATERIALS TEXTBOOK which has been published by PAPASOTIRIOU Publications.
The excellently edited textbook attempts to describe the status in the market of electronic components as it is today. As the author realizes, the rapid development of electronics resulted in doubling the knowledge only in the quinquennium 1985-1990, something that caused an equivalent growth in know-how. The textbook gains even more authority by the attitude of other relative books, not only Greek, who overlook for many years specific components and consequently prohibiting their implementation.
The book is divided in five chapters; the first one shows the elements which are necessary by the science of materials, such as conductors, semi-conductors and insulators, describing more specifically the most common materials of those categories. The second chapter looks through the resistors in every form: fixed, variable, dividers, imprinted, IC, SMD, thermistor, varistor, even the special ones. Respectively, the third chapter is devoted in every type of capacitor: dielectric, electrolytic, double-coating, plated, ICs, SMD, variable and their applications. The fourth chapter looks through coils in their full variety: fixed, variable, high and low frequency, special and SMD. The book is complemented by the references and a useful index.
This book, accompanied by many figures, informative diagrams and tables, is offered for teaching and professional reasons, providing an up-to-date and comprehensive coding of electronic components, without passing over the basic elements of theoretical electronics.

"Elector" (June 1998)

Electronics require knowledge of the materials used in various circuits, knowledge of the attributes of the natural size and the ways they can be used.
The book of Mr. Giokas begins with the elements and alloys used in electronics and electrology.
In the second chapter he examines the resistors, their attributes, their standardization and the color coding. He advances to the categories of resistors, fixed and variable, adjusted and special resistors, as well as the materials they are made of. For every type of resistor and material, you will find its individual behavior.
Mr. Giokas is not only referring to common resistors but also to modern materials, such are the resistors of surface dependence (SMD), thin film in glass, rows of resistors in plastic coating (as are the integrated DIL and SIL), to thermistors on light resistors etc. Accordingly, the next chapters elaborate on capacitors, coils and filters. The last chapters are devoted in RC, LC, ceramic and SAW filters.
The book in general examines the common and modern materials, is easy to read, comprehensive and full of useful information. It is addressed mainly to students of technical institutions, but is a useful tool for everyone who wants to refresh in things they have forgotten.

"Mastoremata" (N.11, February 1998)

The book is addressed to students of electronics of all levels and to professionals, as a useful tool. It mainly refers to “passive” components because, despite the development of electronics nowadays, in 1993 the 70% of electronic equipments used worldwide were passive.
The book also examines the presentation of components which were introduced for instance in 1976 in the market but even after 20 years they are almost unknown. No other book is concerned with those.
